The Good

Classical education is character education. We are not just teaching reading, writing, and arithmetic. We are teaching humans. Parental involvement, classroom management, recess, physical education, lunchtime, and opening ceremony are all vital components of education as we train students to be good citizens in their communities. A classical curriculum cannot educate as well as a classical school culture. A healthy culture will graduate students who can keep a sturdy life outlook through trials.

The True

Truth does not mean indifferent memorization of cold facts. Truth shapes lives, which is why sound reason is essential. Since theology is the apex of education, we teach all subjects from a Christian worldview to cultivate in our students an informed faith. At the same time, properly viewing the world requires letting each subject stand on its own merit. History, science, and literature have some messy edges; we train students to graciously navigate them as they gain robust understanding of the world around them.

The Beautiful

We offer a rich arts and music curriculum, incorporating memorization of old hymns and great speeches, embodied learning, nature study, poetry, singing, and the copying of masterworks into the daily classroom routine. Students master language through a sequential course through phonics, grammar, composition, Greek & Latin, rhetoric, and more. We give beauty the time it deserves to form grooves in children's lives that train their aesthetic.

Curriculum from Hillsdale College

Cedar Classical Academy is a Hillsdale College Curriculum School, a distinction that offers our school access to a tried and true K-12 Curriculum from the Hillsdale College K-12 Education Office.

About Hillsdale

Hillsdale College was founded to provide the kind of sound learning necessary to preserve the blessings of liberty. For over 175 years, it has offered an outstanding liberal arts education for undergraduate students. Restoring excellence to American K-12 education is a natural extension of the College’s mission, and Hillsdale has been helping K-12 schools for over three decades.

Hillsdale teaches K-12 schools to provide an education that is both classical and American in its orientation; one that is rooted in the liberal arts and sciences, offers a firm grounding in civic virtue, and cultivates moral character.

Hillsdale’s curriculum, contained in the Hillsdale College K-12 Program Guide, is available to Cedar Classical Academy at no cost; it is made possible by the generous support of friends of Hillsdale College.

CCA Sports Mission Statement

The Cedar Classical Academy Sports Program seeks to support the mission of the school by offering an organized, competitive platform outside of the classroom for training the whole person–mind, body and spirit–emphasizing the virtues of hard work, self-discipline, excellence, teamwork, and sportsmanship. CCA Sports aims to build school culture by expecting participating students, fans, parents, and attendees to display competitive joy while competing, coaching, or cheering.

Sports offered at CCA are developed with the following commitments:

Supporting the Mission of the School

  • We aim for excellence and mastery that is accessible to the widest number of students and therefore will prioritize a smaller number of competitive sports that align best with the mission of the school.
  • We do not want sports commitments to interfere with classroom requirements, so we expect coaches to work with school staff to schedule practices and games with a reasonable expectation for student participation.
  • We expect parents to help their students learn how to prioritize their time and work efficiently to manage the extra time commitment required for practices and competitions.
  • We will not practice or schedule competitions on Sundays.

Aiming at Virtue

  • In all our sports, we seek to encourage and reward virtue over wins & losses.
  • We expect students who commit to a sport to work hard and fulfill their commitment, even if they find it challenging or difficult. Perseverance and following through on commitments is one way sports can form virtue in our students.
  • We want all our sports teams to recognize hard work as the foundation upon which skill and ability is built.
  • Self-discipline will be emphasized to help students learn to control their bodies as well as their minds in order to develop their skill and perform under pressure.
  • Since we aim at excellence in everything we do at CCA, there will always be room for growth and improvement no matter one’s natural ability. We seek to measure excellence by measurable improvement, both individually as a team. Victories may be a fruit but they are not essential in the pursuit of excellence and mastery.
  • Emphasizing teamwork teaches students to recognize they are not simply focused on their own achievement or recognition but are concerned about working together as they practice and compete. We want our students to learn how to be unified and others-focused, recognizing they can accomplish more together than individually.
  • Sportsmanship is a test of one’s heart as they compete. We want students, parents and fans to learn how to be thankful and congratulatory in defeat and humble and gracious in victory.

Building School Culture

  • We strive for a culture of competitive joy in both practices and games.
  • We desire students to excel in the virtues of sport, competing to receive the prize, but we aim for hearts that are joyful and that delight in working hard and working together. Sports should be fun even as we compete to win.
  • We encourage students to participate in the Sports Program regardless of their skill set or ability. Every student is able to work hard regardless of their natural ability, and therefore every student has something to contribute to the team culture.
  • We believe sports are an important but not ultimate aspect of life, and therefore we seek to enjoy the blessings that come from competition and the community that is formed around it.
